Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence: Quality that stand the test of time
Words by: Elise Blight
In celebrating our 30th year, we will be shining a light on some of the beautiful projects we have had the privilege of being involved with, that have defined our journey and are testament to WE-EF LIGHTING quality that stands the test of time.
In this article, we highlight the enduring excellence of WE-EF across a range of iconic Victorian projects, with Braeside Victoria, being the starting point for WE-EF LIGHTING in Australia back in 1994.
Princes Pier, Victoria
Princes Pier in Melbourne is a testament to the enduring quality of WE-EF’s engineering. This historical pier, originally built between 1912-1915, is an important part of Victoria’s maritime history, so much so that the Victorian Government funded a $34 million refurbishment by Fitzgerald Constructions in 2011. The pier features 34 x RBL640 Series HIT luminaires in classic silver, mounted 3 luminaires per pole for a unique and interesting aesthetic. With the 5CE corrosion protection system, while an older pre-LED technology, these luminaires are still functioning beautifully, a perfect example of the robustness of WE-EF’s lighting solutions for tough coastal conditions.
Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC)
Known for its striking architecture and state-of-the-art facilities, the MCEC hosts a wide range of events from international conventions to exhibitions. During its 2009 redevelopment, WE-EF luminaires were installed, enhancing the centre’s lighting with quality PIA240, PFL240, and FLC131 luminaires.
This project underscores the adaptability and high performance of our products in large-scale, high-traffic environments. The MCEC remains a beacon of architectural brilliance and effective lighting design. In this installation, PIA240s are installed in an uplighting application but are well shielded under the eaves of the building for safe, glare free movement of pedestrians around the centre.
Southern Cross Station
Southern Cross Station in Melbourne was originally built in 1859 and underwent a major redevelopment from 2002 to 2006. WE-EF luminaires were added during this redevelopment, enhancing the stations safety and wayfinding for people.
Southern Cross Station was a landmark project for WE-EF, pushing us to new heights. Our DAC250 and PFL240 products were selected for their ability to withstand the station’s unique environmental challenges, including extreme temperature variations and pollution. Even after 20 years, our luminaires continue to provide reliable and efficient lighting, proving their exceptional durability.
Eureka Tower
Eureka Tower, completed in 2006, is an iconic skyscraper in Melbourne, renowned for its striking gold crown and impressive height. Standing at 297 metres, it was the tallest residential building in the world at the time of its completion. The tower features the RFL540-SE luminaires from WE-EF, which contribute to its stunning exterior illumination, enhancing its architectural grandeur and prominence in Melbourne’s skyline. These luminaires have been integral in maintaining the tower’s impressive façade, offering both performance and reliability. Despite the passage of time, our products remain as effective as ever, illuminating this architectural marvel.
This series showcases how WE-EF’s commitment to quality and innovation has illuminated some of Victoria’s most significant landmarks. As we look back, we are proud of our heritage and excited about the future, confident that our lighting solutions will continue to shine brightly for years to come.
