The redevelopment of Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach stations along Melbourne’s Frankston line formed part of the Level Crossing Removal Project’s effort to eliminate five dangerous crossings and reconnect coastal communities. The design by COX Architecture balanced complex site constraints including a narrow corridor between Nepean Highway and Station Street, coastal exposure, and the integration of new bridges, shared paths and civic spaces, with the need to create safe, accessible and sustainable transport hubs.
For the lighting design team, the challenge was to deliver a unified, high-performance lighting solution that ensured safety, enhanced wayfinding and visually complemented the sculptural, dune-inspired architecture while meeting stringent energy and durability requirements in a harsh marine environment.
Solution
Lighting consultancy WSP developed a cohesive lighting approach that integrated seamlessly with the stations’ geometry and urban context. Functional, artful and sympathetic to its surroundings, the design brought each station to life through light. To realise this vision, Buckford Illumination Group VIC supplied WE-EF’s VFL500 and OLV300 luminaires, selected for their precise optical control, marine-grade durability and visual comfort.
These luminaires provided consistent, glare-controlled illumination for platforms, forecourts and public areas, aligning with the project’s sustainability targets and contributing to the 6-Star Green Star achievement at Edithvale and 5-Star ratings at Chelsea and Bonbeach.
Result
The result is a series of modern, welcoming and contextually sensitive station precincts that enhance safety, connectivity and community identity. The lighting design supports functional performance while accentuating the architectural forms, creating a subtle yet radiant expression of urban illumination.
In recognition of this work, WSP received an IES VIC/TAS Award of Commendation for its seamless integration of lighting, architecture and place. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design and quality luminaires can shape safe, sustainable and visually distinctive public spaces.
