Community day at St Kilda West
Words by: WE-EF
Last Thursday, October 17th the WE-EF team had the privilege of spending the day at St Kilda West Beach, giving back to the local community and its vibrant ecosystem.
With sustainability at the heart of everything we do, it was a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the restoration of a native revegetation site and connect with the natural environment we’re so passionate about.
A Day of Learning and Conservation
Our day began at 9:30 am with a warm meet and greet under a sunny sky, followed by an Acknowledgment of Country and a quick overview of the day’s activities. Armed with gardening gloves, trowels, and plenty of enthusiasm, we rolled up our sleeves for some important tasks: weeding, planting, transplanting, and propagation. By the time we finished, our collective efforts had removed 72 bags of invasive plants and we successfully planted 150 sprouts of pig face and 100 sprouts of rounded noon flower—both native plants vital for supporting local biodiversity. Additionally, we propagated 230 pieces of silver saltbush, a habitat essential for the superb fairywren.
A fun fact we learned during the day—did you know you can actually eat silver saltbush? Some of us even tried a taste of the salty, savoury leaves!
As the weather turned, we just managed to wrap up before the rain started, a lovely conclusion to a rewarding and productive day.

To top off the day, the team headed over to see the new WE-EF premises for the very first time. Donning helmets, high-visibility vests, and boots, we took our first steps into what will soon become our new home in early 2025. It was a fitting way to end the day, full of excitement for the future and with a sense of accomplishment from our conservation efforts.
Our community day reminded us of the importance of staying connected to the environments we serve, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to help restore the beautiful native landscape at St Kilda West. Exciting times are ahead, and we look forward to continuing our journey with sustainability and innovation at the forefront. Stay tuned for more updates from the WE-EF team!
